A platform of 147 District Teacher Development Centres nationwide

To support Continued Professional Teacher Development (CPTD) at a local level the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has established a platform of 147 District Teacher Development Centres (DTDCs) nationwide. These are physical sites located in districts which are easily accessible to teachers from schools in the district.

From these DTDCs curriculum support staff can operate, teachers can access resources, CPTD courses are delivered and teacher professional learning communities (PLCs) can meet.

Vodacom and UNISA partner with the DBE in to develop the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) skills of teachers and have equipped the majority of the 147 DTDCs with ICT resources and internet connectivity.

This makes the DTDCs hubs of digital teaching and learning which also offer services to learners in the district and members of the community in which they are based.

Vodacom: from 9 to 91 centres in 4 years

After the successful proof of concept in 2012 in which nine teacher centres, one in each province, were rolled out in close collaboration with the DBE structures, Vodacom has now equipped and connected a total of 91 DTDCs across the country.

The DTDCs provide spaces designed to train teachers on how to integrate ICT in the classroom These spaces are equipped with interactive boards, laptops, desktops, servers, data projectors, routers and printers. They also provide access to educational content

UNISA: 45 centres

In November 2016 the University of South Africa (UNISA) announced that in partnership with the DBE and the Department of Higher Education (DHET) 45 teacher centres are connected and equipped with various ICT resources. These centres will also support the UNISA student teachers during their internships in the districts.
